To share a link in Discord without looking like spam, explain what it is, why it belongs in that channel, and what you want people to do with it. Share it once in the narrowest relevant place. Disclose your connection if you benefit from attention, and do not use mentions or direct messages to manufacture reach.

A bare link asks everyone else to investigate the risk and relevance for you. One sentence of context turns it into a contribution: “This is the accessibility guide I mentioned. The keyboard-shortcut table answers the question above.”

Servers often separate ordinary resources, personal work, creator promotion, recruitment, fundraising, and external invites. Read the rules and channel topic before posting. Permission to share an article does not automatically include permission to advertise your store, community, stream, referral code, or server invite.

If the rule is unclear and the link benefits you, ask a moderator once before posting. Do not send the link inside the permission request. Describe it plainly: “I wrote a free guide related to today’s topic. Is the resources channel appropriate?”

Do not shop for a different moderator after receiving a no. A server can decline promotion without declaring your work harmful.

Give readers a reason before asking for a click

A useful link post answers four questions:

  • What is it?
  • Why is it relevant now?
  • What will the reader find there?
  • What kind of response, if any, are you inviting?

For example:

That message is specific and discussable. “Important, click here” uses urgency without evidence. “Check this out” makes the reader do all the work.

If you are recommending something, share the reason that connects the recommendation to the conversation. A long sales pitch is not better context. One or two honest sentences are usually enough.

Disclose your relationship to the destination

Say when the link is yours, belongs to a friend or employer, contains an affiliate relationship, or otherwise benefits you. The disclosure should be visible in the message, not hidden after several clicks.

Useful phrasing includes:

  • “I wrote this guide.”
  • “This is my project, so I benefit if people use it.”
  • “This link contains an affiliate code.”

Disclosure does not override a no-promotion rule. It helps people interpret a link that is otherwise allowed. Avoid presenting your own work as an independent discovery or having friends post it to conceal your involvement.

Share once and let interest be voluntary

Post in one relevant channel unless the rules explicitly direct cross-posting. Do not paste the same destination into general chat, topic channels, event threads, and members’ DMs. Repetition is not evidence of relevance.

Discord’s current Community Guidelines prohibit unsolicited bulk messages and spam. Discord safety guidance also warns users about suspicious links, unexpected downloads, and credential theft. Those platform concerns are more serious than merely seeming awkward, but they explain why communities treat unexplained or repeated links cautiously.

Do not shorten a URL simply to hide the destination. Use the canonical domain when possible. If a long tracking URL can be removed without breaking the destination, share the clean version. Never ask members to paste code into developer tools, scan an unexpected login QR code, disable security software, or download an executable to view ordinary content.

Discord phishing recognition is a broader security topic. For normal sharing, provenance and context are the useful overlap: readers should be able to see where a link goes and why you trust it.

Handle previews and sensitive content honestly

Discord may generate an embed preview, but a preview is not proof that a page is safe or current. Check the destination yourself before posting. Confirm that it loads, matches your description, and does not unexpectedly expose explicit, graphic, or private material.

If a legitimate resource contains sensitive content, state that before the link and use the channel’s established spoiler or content-warning practice. Do not use a shocking preview to gain attention. In an adult-only social community, “adult” still does not mean every channel accepts sexual or graphic content.

When linking a screenshot, private conversation, or member-created file, obtain the relevant consent first. Removing a display name may not remove identifying context.

Make the message conversational

If you want discussion, ask one bounded question after the context. “The author recommends optional introductions. Would that reduce pressure here?” gives readers an angle. “Thoughts?” can work among friends but often produces no clear starting point.

Do not tag a list of people to force replies. If one person explicitly requested the resource, reply to their message so the link has context. Discord’s reply feature can preserve that reference, and you can decide whether the reply needs to notify them.

For a new topic rather than a requested resource, start a good Discord discussion and let the link support your point instead of replacing it.

If someone says the channel is wrong, delete or move the post if you have permission and thank them for the direction. If the link was broken, edit the destination and note the correction. If your relationship was unclear, add the disclosure.

Do not argue that other people post links too. Their links may have different context, permission, or frequency. Ask what rule applies going forward.

If the destination itself was compromised or misleading, remove it promptly and warn the channel without repeating a dangerous URL unnecessarily. Change credentials through the service’s official route if you entered them, and use Discord’s official reporting process for platform abuse.
